Who's Who of Crow Creek Valley

John E. Perkins

Last Name: Perkins
First Name: John
Middle Name: E.
Born: 1868
Mother: Cornelia Perkins
Spouse: Clara Morse (school teacher)

Other information: (email from David Perkins Sun, 28 Nov 2004 15:33:31) CD Sherwood, via his Tennessee Imigration and Land Company, sold the land upon which the house was built to my great-grandmother, Cornelia Perkins, on 4-20-1887 (deed book# 12, page 497). She, in turn, conveyed the land to my grandfather, John E. Perkins, on 10-27-1892, the price being his "services and materials furnished to build a dwelling house" (deed book# 16, page 532). My grandfather, a 24 year old newlywed, built the house for his new family.

There my family resided until they moved to Illinois. They conveyed a deed to the property to AJ Barnes on 3-11-1902 (deed book #25, page 327). Mr. Barnes was kind enough to send a copy of the photo, already in your possession, of the "old homestead" to my grandfather in 1924.

Gager kilns & cooperage

In Sherwood, my grandfather worked in a plant which built wooden kegs. He had the "easy" job, oiling the equipment, for which he was paid 50 cents/day.

It was in Sherwood that my grandfather had met my grandmother, Clara Morse, who was a schoolteacher there.
