Who's Who of Crow Creek Valley Vernon Lem King
Other information: Vernon King was from a small and close-knit family. He was the youngest of three boys with no sisters, and one of his brothers died as a baby. Vernon served in the U. S. Army, 1952-1954. After his two year stint in the Army, Vernon was ambitious and completed high school under the G. I. Bill. Vernon worked for several years at the Avondale plant, in Stevenson, Alabama. Plant work wasn’t to his liking so he started his own business buying and selling produce. After learning the fundamentals of that business, he opened a small store in Sherwood. Vernon was an avid hunter and fisherman. In 1975, Vernon coached a championship softball team in Sherwood. The team won in the Regional and State tournaments, and went on to win several games at the playoffs in New York state. Several years later, Vernon started mowing and cleaning burial plots for a fee at Mountain View Cemetery, and he continued that line of work for over 20 years. Information submitted by Don Jones.
