Other information: Harding's tombstone indicates he was a Private, in the U. S. Army, during World War I. No one knows where he came from or exactly when he showed up in Sherwood. Some theorize that he came by train, possibly as a hobo or a traveler who ran out of money. Maybe he just liked the looks of the place, while passing through, and decided to stay a while. For some period of time Harding lived alone in a small house on Block Row. Before he died one of his legs was amputated.
