Obituary, Fr. George W. Jones May 7, 1952, Winchester Herald-Times Funeral services were conducted at 11 a.m. Tuesday at the mission. Officiating were the Rev. Bonnell Spencer, of St. Andrew's School; the Rt. Rev. E.P. Dandridge, Episcopal Bishop of Tennessee; and the Rev. Theodore Barth, bishop coadjutor of Tennessee. Burial was in Mountain View Cemetary with Steed-Anderton in charge. The priest of Epiphany had been at the mission since 1929. He was assigned to the mission Full-time in 1932. Father Jones was born at Birdville Plantation, Millen, Ga. He was the son of George Washington and Mattie Anderson Jones. He was educated at the University School for Boys, Stone Mountain, Ga. and at the University of Georgia at Athens. He farmed at Birdsville until 1913, when he went into boys' work. first at Anson Dodge Episcopal Home, St. Simon's, Ga., then at Christ School, Arden, N.C. He was ordained to the diaconate at St. Andrew's School while teaching there. He was ordained a priest at Sherwood. As a missionary priest, he improved standards in the community of Sherwood and almost singlehandedly built the congregation of the mission to 400 communicants. He also established St. David's Community House with funds contributed by a large list of benefactors, and dedicated it to Sherwood residents for sports and recreation. He is survived by a sister, Mrs. Ben Franklin, Birdsville Plantation. |
